The MEPEI is an independent, non-profit organization that serves to promote greater understanding of the Middle East, its diverse culture, languages, and people, and to create links between individuals, institutions, and communities.
- Through dialogue, research and advocacy MEPEI works to strengthen the relationship between the Middle East and the EU.
- Through formal and informal meetings, conferences, lectures, seminaries and workshops MEPEI promotes and supports innovative thinking in public and foreign policy, as well as in business.
- MEPEI serves to help dispel misperceptions about the Middle East through articles and appearance in media.
- MEPEI publishes reports covering the contemporary Middle East.
Chairman - General (ret). Sergiu Medar is former National Security Adviser and Chief of National Security Department, former General Director of the Defence Intelligence General Department and, previously, head of the Romanian Military Intelligence Department.
He holds a PhD and worked as scientific researcher at the Science and Engineering Institute. From 1990-1992 he worked with the Military Intelligence Department, pursuing in the meantime postgraduate studies in military intelligence. In 1992 he was appointed deputy to the military attaché of Romania in the US, Argentina and Brazil. In 1996, he was promoted to full military attaché in the US.
General Medar was a guest speaker at the Marshall Center in Garmish, Germany, and at the US Joint Military Intelligence College. He is professor at Lucian Blaga University, Sibiu, and associate professor at National Defence University of Romania and National Defence College.
President - Flavius Caba-Maria is Director of the Economic Department. His background is in politics, regional security and economic development with a particular focus on AfPak. He holds a B.A. in Organizational Management, a B.A. in Law and a M.A. in Political Science.
Vicepresident - Doina Lărgeanu is an experienced policy and strategy researcher with a significant expertise in project development. Holding a BA in Psychosociology, she has a strong interest in the Middle East security, political and social dynamics, with a particular focus on democratic trends and cross-border cooperation development.
Counsellor - Razvan Gabor is an independent political analyst. He holds a B.A. in Political Science and has expertise in Middle East political and economic issues. He specializes in Middle East regional security architecture, internal politics and foreign affairs.
Researcher and project coordinator/manager - Roxana Albișteanu holds a BA in International Relations and European Studies, an MA in Security Studies, Postgraduate studies in International Relations and Security and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in foreign languages (Russian and Farsi). Research interests: EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy towards the Middle East, Political and economic developments in the region - with a focus on Iran, Energy Security.
