On September 1, 2021, Germany and France urged Iran to return “as quickly as possible” to Vienna negotiations on reviving its 2015 nuclear deal JCPOA with world powers.

Christopher BURGER, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said at a weekly press conference in Berlin that: “We have repeatedly made our position clear about the negotiations in Vienna. We urge Iran to take a constructive stance and return to the negotiating table as quickly as possible“.

“We’re ready for this. But, the time window for negotiations cannot remain open indefinitely” BURGER added.

BURGER’s remarks came after Iran’s new foreign minister Hossein Amir-ABDOLLAHIAN indicated that Iran’s return to the nuclear talks in Vienna could be months away.

France’s foreign minister Jean-Yves Le DRIAN told his newly-appointed Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-ABDOLLAHIAN in a telephone call it was urgent for Tehran to return to the talks, Le Drian’s ministry said in a statement.

Amir-ABDOLLAHIAN was quoted by Iranian media outlets as saying that the other sides participating in the talks understand that it would take “two or three months” for the new government to be established and prepare.

A sixth round of indirect talks between Iran and US was adjourned two days after  Ebrahim RAISI was elected Iran’s president. He took office on August 5.

Since April, 2021, Iran and six powers have tried to work out how Tehran and Washington can both return to compliance with the nuclear pact, which former US President Donald Trump abandoned in 2018 and reimposed harsh sanctions on Tehran.

Iran in reaction, has violated the nuclear limits of the accord, under which agreed to curb its nuclear work in exchange for lifting international sanctions.

In August, 2021, France, Germany and UK voiced grave concern about reports from the UN nuclear watchdog confirming Iran has produced uranium metal enriched up to 20 % fissile purity for the first time and lifted production capacity of uranium enriched to 60 %. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons.

Delegations from the JCPOA’s signatories UK, France, Germany, Russia, and China launched efforts in April to bring Tehran and Washington, which abandoned the deal in 2018, back into its fold. After RAISI’s June 18 election victory, these talks in Vienna were suspended.
