Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Sergey Lavrov arrived in China to attend the third meeting of the foreign ministers of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries that will be organized on March 31^th and April 1^st.

The two foreign ministers of Russian Federation and Pakistan were received by the Chinese foreign minister in the Tunxi city of eastern China’s Anhui province.

It’s the second meeting of the two diplomats from China and Pakistan in the last two weeks. China and Pakistan have a strong historical alliance.

Wang visited Pakistan a week ago for Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) foreign ministers’ summit where he met Qureshi.

After the meeting, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry declared that Qureshi and Wang exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine.

Qureshi “conveyed readiness to help facilitate a diplomatic solution including through the OIC platform.” Pakistan last week proposed a joint mediation by the OIC and China to bring peaceful outcome to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Wang Wenbin, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said after the meeting: “China and Russia have always adhered to developing bilateral ties based on non-alignment, non-confrontation, and not targeting third countries, and will continue to promote world multi-polarization and democracy in international relations.”

Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian is also present in China for this event. He said: “Afghanistan deserves more attention from the international community. Iran and China reaffirm their support for the independence and national unity of Afghanistan and the Afghan people’s right to decide their fate, and they hope to see a stable and developed Afghanistan that would interact with neighbors”. He wrote on Twitter that Afghanistan deserves “more international attention.” “Iran and China reaffirm their support for independence, national unity, and the people’s right to self-determination,” he said, calling for “a stable, developed, and interactive Afghanistan.”

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin announced on March 29 that the foreign ministers or representatives from Pakistan, Iran, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are scheduled to attend the meeting. Foreign Ministers of Indonesia and Qatar have been invited to the meeting as “guests”, Wang Wenbin said.

The first edition of the meeting on Afghanistan was hosted by Pakistan last September, followed by Iran last October.

Afghanistan is living a humanitarian crisis after the US decision to block Afghan foreign reserves worth $7 billion.
